Residency
Why Panama
Panama's Friendly Nations programme is one of the most flexible residency pathways available. It applies to 50 designated countries, including Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and most of Europe.
Maintaining residency
Maintaining your residency is very flexible. Once you obtain permanent residency, one short trip to Panama every 18 months to 2 years maintains the status. You do not need to live in Panama year-round.
Territorial tax regime
Panama taxes income that is sourced in Panama. Income earned outside the country is generally outside that charge. How that applies to your nationality, residence and assets is confirmed in consultation; this page does not publish tax rates or treat the summary as advice.
Path to citizenship
There is a clear path to citizenship after five years of permanent residency. Naturalisation remains a separate government process and is confirmed against current Servicio Nacional de Migración and electoral-tribunal requirements in consultation.
Who Qualifies
The programme applies to nationals of 50 designated countries, including Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and most of Europe, who establish an economic tie to Panama (employment, business ownership, or real estate). The full designated-country list is confirmed against Servicio Nacional de Migración materials in consultation.
Economic Tie Options
Applicants must demonstrate an economic tie. Decreto Ejecutivo 197 of 2021 sets three published tracks: employment with a Panamanian company, Panamanian real estate of at least USD 200,000 in the applicant's name, or a USD 200,000 fixed-term deposit in a Panamanian bank. The first stage is a two-year provisional permit, then conversion to permanent residence.
Eligibility
Who this is for
- Friendly Nations nationals (US, UK, Canada, Germany, Australia, and 45+ others) using this as the direct residency filing
- Entrepreneurs earning outside Panama — under territorial rules, non-Panama earnings are taxed at zero
- Digital nomads and remote workers: Panama as a tax-friendly base, without a move to live there
- Business owners holding a company under territorial tax, with privacy and latitude to operate
- Families abroad who want to maintain their residency with 1 short trip every 18 months to 2 years
- Applicants whose end point is second citizenship — eligibility after 5 years of permanent residency
